Announcing SOC 2 Type 1 for Coinbase Staking

We are pleased to announce that we have successfully completed a SOC 2 Type 1 audit for Coinbase’s staking services. 

As the most trusted brand in crypto, security is Coinbase’s highest priority. We pride ourselves on being certifiably secure and building trust through compliance. This SOC 2 report underscores our steadfast commitment to the highest standards of security and provides third-party attestation that our security controls are robustly designed to protect customer data, mitigate risk, and ensure reliable staking operations.

Selecting a reputable auditor was important to us. We chose Deloitte, as they are known for rigorous reviews and strict compliance enforcement. The audit covers our security controls across all supported staking networks hosted on cloud providers. Our networks hosted on bare metal are currently undergoing a separate audit (coming soon). 

We previously obtained SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports for both Coinbase Custody and our prime brokerage platform, Coinbase Prime. We are proud to add this SOC 2 Type 1 report for staking to our list of SOC reports. 

Why SOC 2 Matters

SOC 2 (System and Organization Controls 2) is a compliance framework developed by the ​​American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). It evaluates how effectively a company safeguards and manages customer data and is based on the five Trust Services Criteria: security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy. SOC 2 reports are issued after independent third-party audits are conducted to verify compliance with these criteria. SOC 2 applies not only in the crypto world, but in traditional finance as well.

SOC 2 compliance is critically important for service organizations that handle customer assets, financial transactions, and other sensitive data (e.g., custodians, staking providers, exchanges). The framework ensures that security measures are properly designed to safeguard funds, prevent unauthorized access, and maintain platform reliability.
