Coinbase Launches Derivative Contracts in Canada
TL;DR: Eligible Canadian traders can, for the first time, access regulated derivatives contracts on Coinbase. Offered through Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), Coinbase is the first major crypto native platform to offer direct native crypto futures in Canada. These capital-efficient perpetual and dated contracts allow sophisticated investors to trade, speculate, and hedge on a platform they already trust.

Historically, Canadian traders looking to access crypto-derivative products have often had to rely on unregulated or offshore platforms. Today, that changes.
The launch of derivatives contracts on Coinbase offers eligible Canadian investors access to highly liquid and regulated contracts including:
23 perpetual and dated futures such as Bitcoin, ETH and SOL;
Five commodity futures including Gold, Silver and Oil
And index futures like COIN50.
As digital assets become increasingly integrated into the Canadian financial landscape, this expansion gives sophisticated traders the opportunity to leverage risk-management tools that were previously only available to major financial institutions.
Why Canadian Investors Care About Derivatives
Corporations and financial institutions routinely use derivatives to manage financial risks. According to the Bank of Canada, one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations actively use derivatives to hedge their earnings.
Meanwhile, global demand for these products is massive. Globally, crypto derivative trading volume is about 4.4 times the volume of crypto spot trading. Yet until now Canadians have not had a regulated venue to access these contracts, reducing their ability to express a market view or protect their portfolios.

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom. The legacy financial system has built walls to keep certain investors out by dictating what they can and cannot trade. We want to break those walls down. We want Coinbase to be the single place you go to manage your entire financial life. We believe if you see it in a headline, you should be able to trade it.
