How to interview for a Product Design role at Coinbase
TL;DR: We believe that great design is the bridge to the future of finance. To help applicants prepare, here is a transparent look at what to expect during our Product Design interview loop, the skills we evaluate, and how we make decisions.

At Coinbase, we’re on a mission to increase economic freedom in the world, and our Product Design team is at the heart of bringing that vision to life. We’re not just creating financial tools, we’re designing the experience for a new era of money, making it more accessible and easier for everyone to use.
We know interviewing can be stressful, so we want to make our process as transparent and helpful as possible. This guide is a behind-the-scenes look at our Product Design interviews, with tips on how to prepare and what our team is looking for. For a broader view, you can also check out our blog post, "How to interview at Coinbase."
What we look for in Product Design
During interviews, we’ll be looking for these five skills:
Craft: We’re looking for a high level of polish and attention to detail in your work. We want to see how you’ve raised the quality bar in your past roles.
Strategy: We want to understand the "why" behind your decisions. We'll look for how you solve real user problems, navigate technical constraints, and connect your work to broader business goals.
Communication & Influence: We want to see how you build relationships, share your work in a clear and compelling way, and use your influence to guide projects forward.
Scope & Complexity: We look for your specific contributions to projects and how you apply subject matter expertise to solve complex challenges.
Curiosity & Continuous Learning: We want to see a constant desire to learn. We'll look for crypto-curious candidates who follow the industry's evolution and explore AI tools to improve their workflow and unlock new possibilities for our users.
The Virtual Onsite
Our virtual onsite process typically consists of six sessions designed to give us a 360-degree view of your work and collaboration style.

Portfolio Presentation: This is your chance to showcase your best work. We recommend presenting two case studies. See portfolio presentation tips below.
Design Challenge: You’ll team up with one of our product designers for a collaborative whiteboard session. We’ll give you a fun, non-crypto-related prompt, and we’ll work through it together, just like we would on any other project.
App Critique: You and a product designer will choose a popular mobile app to discuss together This is a chance to geek out on product thinking and see how you analyze design decisions in the wild.
XFN Collaboration: You’ll meet with a product manager to talk about how you work with other teams. We’re interested in learning how you partner with product and engineering, turn feedback into better design, and rally a team to ship great work.
Past Work: Think of this as a follow-up to your portfolio presentation. We’ll dive deeper into one of your projects, giving you a chance to share more detail about specific design decisions, the user research that informed them, and the ultimate impact of your work.
Recruiter Sync: You’ll finish the day with your Recruiter. This is a great time to share feedback on the process or ask any lingering logistical questions.
Portfolio Presentation Tips
You've got 45 minutes to shine. Staying within the time limit is just as important as the content itself, so be sure to practice your timing. We recommend this simple structure:
Intro ~5 mins:
Give a quick snapshot of who you are and why your experience matters for the role. We also want to hear about your crypto journey and how you've taken advantage of recent AI innovations to augment your workflow. Dedicate a maximum of two slides to share what draws you to the space, which products you use, and your perspective on the unique challenges in crypto.
2 Case Studies ~30 mins:
For your case studies, your storytelling and high-craft design solutions are equally important. Your portfolio should be a visual showcase that shows, not just tells. To best tell your story, please prepare a slide-based presentation. Select projects that demonstrate both your strategic thinking and how you’ve obsessed over the details. We want to see how you solved real user problems and the impact your work had on the business. And since projects don't always go smoothly, tell us who you collaborated with, what deadlines you faced, and how you navigated unexpected challenges.Q&A ~10 mins: Save the last block for questions.
The key is to pare down. Not every detail matters. Focus on the takeaways that show us why you'd be a great fit for the role.
A Note on Crypto Fluency
Whether you are a "degen" or just opening your first wallet, we want candidates who are excited to dive down the rabbit hole.
You do not need to be a blockchain expert to interview at Coinbase. However, we encourage all candidates to brush up on the basics. Familiarize yourself with our business, read up on the difference between Web2 and Web3, or listen to a few crypto podcasts. Throughout the process, we look for that spark of interest and the desire to build the future of finance.
Good starting points:
Crypto Basics – short guides to Bitcoin, Ethereum, blockchains, wallets, security, and more
Crypto resources: what to read, watch, and stream – curated articles, videos, and podcasts if you want to go deeper
The Decision
After your interviews, the hiring team meets to review feedback from everyone you spoke with. We look at the full picture—your skills, experience, and the unique perspective you could bring to our team and our mission.
If you are a builder who wants to solve foundational challenges where the stakes are highest, this is the place to build your career.
