ORDI is the native token of the Ordinals Protocol, a system that allows users to inscribe data, such as images, text, or code, directly onto individual satoshis—the smallest unit of Bitcoin. This process, known as Bitcoin ordinals, effectively enables the creation of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Bitcoin blockchain. ORDI serves as a representation of the first project utilizing the Ordinals Protocol and is often considered the inaugural BRC-20 token, a standard inspired by ERC-20 but designed for Bitcoin. This innovation has broadened Bitcoin’s use cases beyond a simple store of value, bringing it into the world of digital collectibles.
ORDI operates using the Ordinals Protocol, which assigns unique numbers to each satoshi in the Bitcoin blockchain, allowing for individual satoshis to carry additional data like images or text. This process is similar to how NFTs work on Ethereum, but ORDI utilizes Bitcoin’s security and immutability. The BRC-20 token standard, introduced through ORDI, allows for the creation and transfer of fungible tokens on Bitcoin by embedding JSON data in ordinal inscriptions.
