FAQ
Terra Classic (LUNC) is the original iteration of the Terra blockchain protocol, designed to support stable, global payment systems through the use of fiat-pegged stablecoins. The protocol aims to combine the price stability of fiat currencies with the censorship resistance of blockchain technology, offering swift and affordable transactions. In May 2022, after a significant collapse of its algorithmic stablecoin, the original Terra blockchain was rebranded as Terra Classic, while a new chain, Terra (LUNA), was launched. Terra Classic continues to support stablecoins pegged to various currencies, including the U.S. dollar, South Korean won, and Mongolian tugrik.
Terra Classic operates on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism powered by the Tendermint protocol, where LUNA Classic (LUNC) holders stake tokens to validate transactions. The network originally maintained its algorithmic stablecoin, UST, by adjusting its supply through a mint-and-burn mechanism. When UST’s price deviated from its peg, the protocol incentivized users to swap between LUNC and UST, expanding or contracting the stablecoin supply as needed. This mechanism sought to stabilize UST’s price, though its failure in 2022 led to the rebranding of the chain. LUNC tokens now primarily support staking and transaction validation on the Terra Classic network.
Terra Classic aims to offer a platform for stable, global payment systems by utilizing fiat-pegged stablecoins for fast, borderless transactions. The protocol was designed to merge the benefits of cryptocurrencies—such as decentralization and low fees—with the price stability of traditional fiat currencies. Terra Classic has established partnerships, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, to facilitate e-commerce payments via its blockchain network. Merchants using the network incur transaction fees, which are distributed to LUNC stakers as compensation for validating transactions and maintaining network security.
Terra was founded in January 2018 by Daniel Shin and Do Kwon, with the mainnet launching in April 2019. The project initially gained traction by offering algorithmic stablecoins, including UST, which aimed to maintain a peg to the U.S. dollar. In May 2022, following the collapse of UST and a sharp decline in LUNA’s value, the original Terra blockchain was rebranded as Terra Classic, and a new chain, Terra (LUNA), was introduced. This rebranding was part of a recovery plan similar to Ethereum’s response to the DAO hack in 2017. As of August 2022, Terra Classic has a total supply of 6.9 trillion LUNC, with 6.5 trillion LUNC in circulation.
